Maybe you’ve not been able to see any friends for weeks on end, or perhaps you’ve changed jobs and lost positive daily interactions as a result. Sometimes, it’s a feeling you just can’t shake, even if you know there are great people in your life. Feeling alone is something most of us can empathise with.
Loneliness is very different to being a loner or preferring solitude. Persistent loneliness can at times feel debilitating, as the world feels more connected but further apart as each day passes.
Please remember, you are never alone. Even when you feel lonely, there is someone, somewhere, feeling the same way as you who can empathise and understand. With that said, there are ways to help heal the feelings of loneliness you might experience.
Increase your social interactions
Sometimes, the solution to loneliness is as simple as picking up the phone and making plans with someone. Don’t let the fear of rejection deter you from having the initiative to take control of the situation. You might just find your peer is feeling the exact same way as you. If you need to meet new people, join clubs and force yourself to interact with others. It might not lead to a great friendship, but it will give you a much-needed social outlet.
Change your thinking
How often do you decide not to invite a friend over because you don’t want to bother them? Have you opted not to go out to dinner because you’re worried you would be intruding on someone’s time? It’s time to change your thinking. Just like we need to eat and sleep, humans are social creatures. We need interaction.
Improve your social skills
If you’re finding you have difficulties in sustaining deep and meaningful friendships, it might just mean you need a refresher in some of your social skills. While it might seem scary at first, there is a whole world of options to help you regain social confidence.
Services in individual relationship counselling, emotional freedom therapy, EMDR and hypnosis are all ways to help you understand your loneliness away from the more traditional meditation.
